Rosalind Prather is a Trusting Connections Co-Founder, a nanny placement agency and sitter service based in Tucson, Arizona. We were incredibly disappointed to hear the story of the nanny in Georgia that is alleged to have committed identity theft. It was no surprise to find out that the family in this case did not use an agency approved by the Association of Premier Nanny Agencies. No matter how you do it, hiring a nanny can be tricky and often very complicated. But hiring on your own (without an agency that can provide deep industry knowledge) dramatically increases the odds of a negative outcome. It’s like going to Las Vegas and playing the roulette wheel: it is 100% predictable that the outcome is unpredictable.
We all know that life is fraught with risk. There is always a degree of risk in any hiring effort. But, the vast majority of nanny candidates are safe and honest. And, finding a great nanny for your children is like winning the lottery. Everybody wins if we do this right. The key questions here are twofold. One, how much risk tolerance should I have in hiring a nanny? Second, how best to minimize and manage the risk?
The answer to the first question is obvious to most. You should have less tolerance for risk when it comes to your children’s welfare. So, how do you minimize/manage the risk in the hiring process? There are many fantastic Agencies out there that specialize in this very thing.
The Association of Premier Nanny Agencies advocates working with a professional agency that carries the APNA stamp of approval. These agencies specialize in reading between the lines and expertly identifying those caregivers who are safe and those who are not. The most secure route is to let the Agency direct your hiring process from top to bottom and facilitate the most intense series of background checks available. One critical factor that sets agencies apart from online listing sites is that APNA agencies meet their candidates in person. Placement fees for this type of service are not small. But try to make it happen, understanding that you are investing in a fantastic caregiver for the most important people in your life. The dividends will be huge. To lead the life you want, can you afford not to do it this way? But if you can’t do this, you can usually still work with your Agency of choice to vet a caregiver after you have done a search on your own. Bottom line: Have an APNA approved agency involved in this process. You won’t regret it.

The murder of 2 children in NYC by their babysitter/nanny has everyone horrified and distraught—especially parents who have hired childcare for their family. It has every nanny agency owner –almost all of whom are parents—grappling to understand what could have gone so wrong. How did a seemingly capable caregiver go from loving nanny to murderer? Believe me, I have been reading every shred of news I can find to try and understand how this tragedy could have ever happened.
Those of us owners who belong to an organization called APNA (the Association of Premier Nanny Agencies) subscribe to the highest level of screening practices. I know we are all wondering, if this woman had come to us, would we have picked up something about her which would have eliminated her from placement. The truth is without all the facts of the case, we don’t know.
Here’s what we do know. Careful screening of caregivers by professionals does help weed out people who should not be taking care of children. Real background checks—not the cheap ones provided by online sites—are part of the process. But in this case, the woman probably had no prior record. It does appear, however, that her life was unraveling and she was becoming psychologically untethered.
This case is a statistical anomaly. There are thousands upon thousands of wonderful nannies providing excellent care for children and allowing parents to go to work knowing that their children are in loving hands. But just one case like this is one too many. No one wants to be that anomaly. When the facts emerge about this woman, I hope we have some take away that will make us better at what we try to do best– protect the safety and welfare of children.

It is difficult for me to narrow in on only a couple core points that I retained from this 4 day APNA conference, since there were so many amazing speakers and topics shared. The itinerary was jam- packed with so much valuable information such as: how to survive in an online world; how to build your brand with social media; how to meet and exceed expectations of employers; how to retain your top talent in a competitive market; and how to survive and flourish in the nanny industry. Plus there were several opportunities for me to network with other agencies to share ideas, ask questions, and exchange business information, which was invaluable time spent.
Overall, the most important thing I learned is for us at Caring Nannies to lead with relationships and not tools. Relationship-building is everything to our families and our nannies. Those who deliver service and relationships will win. Listening to our families’ and nannies’ needs, responding promptly, and communicating openly creates loyalty and builds lasting and trustworthy relationships. That is our goal at Caring Nannies.
So why choose an APNA agency instead of the others? They are the best of the best! It is highly beneficial to both nannies and parents to choose an APNA agency to represent them.
